A preview of the 50 facts inside
- Did you know that veterinarians are special doctors who take care of all kinds of animals when they are sick or injured? Just like your regular doctor looks after you, a veterinarian goes to a special college for four additional years to study animal biology and learn how to help creatures great and small. These amazing animal doctors must learn how to treat hundreds of different species because a dog is built completely differently from a parrot or a turtle. To do their job well, they use advanced medical tools like x-ray machines and ultrasound scanners to look inside an animal without causing any pain. They work very hard in clean clinics to ensure that pets, farm animals, and exotic zoo creatures stay happy and completely healthy.
- Did you know that the very first official school created to train real veterinarians was opened in the beautiful city of Lyon, France, way back in the year 1761? A kind horse expert named Claude Bourgelat started this wonderful school because he realized that farm animals needed scientific doctors to help them survive terrible illnesses. Before this amazing academy was built, farmers and blacksmiths had to guess how to help sick animals using old traditions. King Louis XV supported this new project because keeping farm animals healthy meant there would be plenty of fresh food for everyone in the country. Soon, students from all over Europe traveled to this special French school to learn the rules of animal science and bring that important knowledge back to their own home countries.
